Man fatally shot person in front yard and fired at police before hourslong SWAT standoff, LAPD says

A shooting suspect at the center of an hourslong SWAT standoff at a home in Jefferson Park has been arrested after a person was found dead in the front yard. The victim's family says it may have stemmed from a feud between a property owner and a tenant. Video from the scene shows a large law enforcement presence outside the home on 23rd Street and Arlington Avenue. Los Angeles police said they were called to the home around 1:30 p.m. Saturday after reports of a shooting. The 911 caller said the shooting victim was lying outside, while the gunman was inside the home. "The call stated that the victim was laying shot in the front yard of the location, and the suspect was inside who shot the victim," said Capt. Mike Bland with LAPD. When officers arrived, they tried to approach the victim, who was found dead with a gunshot wound. That's when LAPD said the suspect fired a shot at officers from inside the home. No officers were hit or injured, and LAPD returned gunfire.

‘Guccis and guns.' More arrests and property seized in burglary bust

Luxury items and guns were seized as LAPD officers served search and arrest warrants last week, nabbing at least 8 alleged thieves suspected of burglarizing dozens of homes across Southern California in recent months. During the searches, detectives found illegal firearms, stolen designer bags, including Guccis, and electronic devices used to scope out potential targets and neutralize security systems during the burglaries, multiple law enforcement sources told NBC LA. The LAPD confirmed the arrests and searches last week but declined to share details, opting to withhold specifics until a press conference with Mayor Karen Bass set for Monday morning. These arrests, made last Wednesday morning, follow other large law enforcement operations aimed at teams of burglars, or 'crews,' suspected of home break-ins, including the recent arrests of 2 adults and 2 teens suspected in the burglary at the Los Feliz home of Brad Pitt and other celebrity break-ins. The adults have been charged with burglarizing homes in LA and Orange Counties, and authorities told NBCLA numerous additional charges are expected to be filed.

Young brothers who disappeared with birth mom in South L.A. are found

Authorities announced Sunday that they have found the two young brothers and their birth mom after the trio disappeared from the kids’ South Los Angeles foster home on Thursday. “The children have been located and will soon be reunited with their foster parents,” the LAPD said in a short release. “Children are in good health.” The California Highway Patrol confirmed the children and their biological mother, 30-year-old Jackline Hernandez-Torres, were found by announcing that the AMBER Alert was deactivated. Authorities did not immediately release where the boys or Hernandez-Torres were found. No further details were available. The alert was issued after the brothers left their foster home near South Virgil Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Investigators believed Hernandez-Torres may have taken them toward the area of West 52nd Street in South Los Angeles. The boys’ foster parents told KTLA they heard the boys opening the door around 1:30 a.m., but by the time the parents ran outside, the kids had taken off.

California elementary teacher filmed himself sexually assaulting kids at school, authorities say

A former Sacramento elementary school teacher used his position as head of the campus broadcast club to groom numerous students and film himself sexually assaulting them in the club’s private room for years, authorities said. Now he may spend the rest of his life behind bars. On Friday, 64-year-old Kim Kenneth Wilson was sentenced to 215 years to life after pleading guilty to nine felony counts of committing lewd acts upon a child, according to the Sacramento County district attorney’s office. He will become eligible for elder parole in 17 years, prosecutors said. Wilson was a longtime teacher at Del Paso Heights Elementary School, where he founded the broadcasting club, which had its own windowless, soundproof room. This is where most of his crimes took place, prosecutors said. After taking children to the room, he would commit sex acts on them — often recording or photographing them. He sometimes forced students to look into the camera while saying and depicting sexual acts, prosecutors said. He also sexually assaulted some young victims while hosting events at his home, according to authorities.
