Mrs. Willis, an LAPD volunteer, hailed as an icon like her movie star son

A volunteer extraordinaire, affectionately called Mrs. Willis, has been dedicating her time and effort at the Los Angeles Police Department's West LA station for 22 years. What people often do not realize is that she's the mother of actor Bruce Willis. Marlene Willis, 90 years young, brings warmth to what could be a tough workplace, solidifying herself as a hidden asset to the department. "I think she means the very best of people that are individuals who believe in the work that our men and women do," former LAPD Chief Michel Moore told NBC Los Angeles. Mrs. Willis volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays and serves her community by reviewing police reports, making notes and checking grammar. "I want to help so much, so much. You have no idea. You cannot imagine how much I want to help," Mrs. Willis said. Those from the West LA station said her presence alone can put a smile on officers' faces. Some even go as far as to say they don't know what they would do without her. In some cases, when officers return to the station after dealing with an awful incident, Mrs. Willis would go up to them and give them a hug, a gesture that is appreciated by every single member of the station. "Mrs. Willis is a very integral part of West Los Angeles and the LAPD," Cpt. Rich Gabaldon, the West LA station's commanding officer, said. "She is an icon here." Mrs. Willis has been recognized as the LAPD volunteer of the year, an award presented by then-Chief Moore, who later took one step further. "While I can't make her a cop, I can at least give her the greatest symbol of what it means to be a cop. And that is a badge of the law center police department," Moore said.

The criminal case against a Los Angeles model and social media influencer accused of burglarizing the homes of men she met on a dating app can proceed to trial, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday. She’s scheduled to be arraigned on April 6 and is currently out on bail with an ankle monitor. She has been ordered to stay away from her alleged victims. “At her trial, we will prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this defendant exploited trust built through online relationships to gain access to victims’ homes and steal from them,” L.A. County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman said in a news release. “Her ability to deceptively influence others, whether in person or online, has now come to an end. Our office is committed to holding accountable anyone who uses deception and manipulation to prey on others.”

The incident unfolded in May 2025 as the officer directed traffic around a concert venue, according to the report. Video shows the officer signaling specific lanes of traffic to move forward as he stood in front of a lane with a motorcycle and a black BMW in front. Over 100 cameras to be installed across Los Angeles to crack down on speeding

Los Angeles will start installing speed cameras across the city in the coming months as part of the California government's street safety initiative. After a state law authorized Los Angeles and other cities to implement the program in 2024, the city council Tuesday approved the LA Department of Transportation to implement the pilot program. City workers are expected to begin the installation of some 125 cameras and test the speed cameras between April and July. Once the installation work is complete, the city will conduct a 60-day public information campaign to warn drivers about the cameras between July and September. "Speeding, as we know, is one of the most serious threats on our streets. Cars are the leading causes of death for children in Los Angeles and the rest of the country,'' Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky said. "This program gives us a tool to prevent those deaths and protect people in every neighborhood.'' The LAPD's data showed 290 people died in traffic incidents in the city last year. The department is expected to provide warnings for first-time violations throughout the duration of the pilot program. Each city district will receive eight cameras but districts 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 will get an additional camera.

LA Council Looks to Increase Assessment Fees to Maintain Street Lights

The Los Angeles City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday allowing the city to develop a process for increasing assessment fees for property owners to cover costs of street light maintenance. On a 13-1 vote, the council advanced a request from the Bureau of Street Lighting, which wants to increase the streetlight maintenance assessment fee. The bureau estimated the fee hike would bring in $125 million to help restore lights across the city that have been impacted by copper wire theft or replace aging infrastructure. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez opposed the item, while Councilwoman Imelda Padilla was absent during the vote. Bureau officials noted the assessment fee has not been increased since 1996. It would impact home owners across the city with streetlights outside their property — encompassing some 584,000 parcels and 225,000 streetlights, according to a report from the bureau.
