Two Dead After Shots Fired Between LAPD Officers And A Gunman In North Hollywood

A shooting between an armed man and police ended with two people dead, including the gunman, in North Hollywood on Monday morning. At 4:50 a.m. Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 12000 block of Victory Boulevard. When officers arrived to the area of Victory Boulevard and Bellingham Avenue they encountered a man with a firearm, the police department said on X. The man pointed his gun at officers and as officers exited their vehicles, they exchanged gunfire with the man. It’s unclear what prompted the shooting. The armed man fled the area and ran north on Bellingham Avenue, toward a parking structure behind a gym; officers established a perimeter around the area. The man came out of the west side of the parking structure on St. Claire Avenue, south of Hamlin Street, where a second shooting between the officers and the man occurred. He then ran back into the structure and came out of the north side, where officers and the man exchanged gunfire for a third time. It was unclear who fired first in all three exchanges between the gunman and police.

Alleged Murder Suspect Barricades Himself Inside Downtown Los Angeles Apartment 

An alleged murder suspect barricaded himself inside an apartment in downtown Los Angeles early Tuesday, eliciting a SWAT Team response and causing roads to be shut down. According to preliminary reports from the Los Angeles Police Department, the reporting party recognized the wanted suspect and called police just after 1:20 a.m. Tuesday. When police responded to the scene, located in the 300 block of 5th Street near Wall Street, the man reportedly answered the door and then slammed it shut upon officers identifying themselves. A perimeter has been set up and the SWAT Team was called in, as the suspect is believed to be armed. As of 6:45 a.m., it appeared the suspect remained barricaded.

Police Continue Search For Person Of Interest In Canoga Park Hit-and-Run Crash That Left One Critical

Police have released new security video of a "person of interest" connected to a hit-and-run in August that left a person in critical condition in Canoga Park. The crash happened on Aug. 3 at around 1 a.m. on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, just north of Parthenia Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. It was around then that "a white Acura 4-door sedan traveling northbound on TopangaCanyon Boulevard ... sideswiped a gray 2022 BMW sedan, causing the driver of the BMW to lose control and collide with a pole," said the LAPD statement. Instead of stopping, the driver continued, leaving the BMW driver behind. They were hospitalized with severe injuries, police said. On Monday, investigators released some footage of a "person of interest" whom they are searching for as part of the case. He was seen wearing a yellow sweatshirt outside of a business the morning of the crash. The city of Los Angeles has offered up to $25,000 as a reward for anyone who has information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the driver.

Attempted Kidnapper Arrested After Trying To Take 3-Year-Old Girl In Stroller From Downtown LA Train Station

Police have announced the arrest of an attempted kidnapper who tried to take a three-year-old girl who was with her mother at a train stop in Los Angeles in late-August. The incident happened on Aug. 26, when the suspect approached a woman who was sitting at the station near Gateway Plaza, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. "The suspect placed his finger on the daughter's chest and kissed her on her forehead before reaching into her stroller," the statement said. "Once the suspect grabbed the harness of the stroller, the mother pushed the suspect away." Police say that the suspect then threatened the woman, telling her that he would kill her as he removed a handsaw from his backpack. He ended up leaving the scene, prompted officers to begin their search. On Thursday, Sept. 12, detectives discovered that their suspect, 35-year-old Noel Gallegos, was already in custody for an unrelated matter. He had additional charges filed including attempted kidnap and two counts of criminal threats, police said.

Valet At Barney's Beanery In West Hollywood In Critical Condition After Assault

The hunt is on for the man who brutally beat a valet at Barney's Beanery in West Hollywood. The attack was carried out for no apparent reason and left the popular longtime valet in critical condition. "It was brutal," said A.J. Sacher, director of operations at the restaurant. "It really wasn't just an assault. It was attempted murder because after getting Frank unconscious through blows, he just stomped on his head." It happened Sunday around 10 p.m. Witnesses say the shirtless suspect first attacked at least two other people out on the street. Valet Efrain Zarazua, who went by Frank to coworkers, went out to see what was happening and the man suddenly turned on him. He punches and kicks him repeatedly, with one final blow to the head. "When I saw the footage, the way he beat him - it was terrible," said Frank's son Chris Zarazua. "Very terrible. He was defenseless, while this monster beat him almost to death." The 51-year-old suffered a serious head injury and broken jaw. He has worked as the valet at Barney's Beanery for more than 30 years.

Kentucky Deputy Shot, Killed By Fleeing Suspect

A Russell County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed while searching for a suspect Monday evening. Deputy Sheriff Joshua Phipps was helping Kentucky State Police and other agencies search on foot for the suspect around 5:30 p.m. at Bluebird Drive. Gunfire broke out when they found him, and Phipps was shot, authorities said. Phipps died later at Russell County Hospital in Russell Springs. The suspect also died in the shooting. “Deputy Josh Phipps died a hero, doing what he liked, Protecting and Serving Russell County,” Sheriff Derek Polston wrote in a social media post early Tuesday. Polston asked for prayers for Phipps’ family and friends and the sheriff’s office and its staff. Phipps was a three-year veteran of the agency. He said a number of other police agencies had contacted to offer help and support covering calls. Condolences poured in from across the state. Gov. Andy Beshear issued a statement on the social media platform X, saying “Tragic news for our commonwealth as a Russell County deputy was killed in the line of duty last night. Britainy and I ask all of Kentucky to join us in praying for his family, fellow law enforcement officers and the entire Russell County community.”

BWC Video Released In Ambush Of Colorado Trooper While He Sat Parked In Median

A Colorado State Patrol corporal was likely a “target of opportunity” when he was ambushed and shot while parked along U.S. 36 near Westminster earlier this month, agency officials said Monday. State patrol leaders released body-worn camera footage of the moments before and after Cpl. Tye Simcox was shot while parked between two concrete barriers in the highway’s center median and doing paperwork on Sept. 7. Investigators still do not know why Victor Anthony De Santiago, 32, slowed down and began shooting at Simcox from his truck, agency chief Col. Matthew Packard said at a news conference. “If pressed today, I would tell you that I believe, based on current information, that Cpl. Simcox was a target of opportunity,” Packard said. “I think the shooter saw a patrol car and that’s the one he decided to take shots at.” Simcox was shot in the right forearm and quickly left his patrol vehicle, grabbed a rifle from the front seat and returned fire, fatally shooting De Santiago, the footage shows. The corporal was taken to Denver Health by a responding trooper and is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities Looking To Identify Boy Found Riding Scooter On Freeway In Los Angeles 

The California Highway Patrol is asking the public for help in identifying a boy they found riding a scooter along the 110 Freeway in Los Angeles on Sunday evening. According to a CHP media release, officers located the child, described as a Black male juvenile between the ages of 10 to 13, riding a scooter in the express lanes of the southbound 110 near Jefferson Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. He was wearing nothing but a black shirt and blue boxer shorts, and it was later determined he entered the freeway from 28th Street and Flower Street, CHP said. The boy is non-verbal, authorities added. Los Angeles County Fire Department officials transported the boy to L.A. General Hospital for observation and contacted the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services as well as the Los Angeles Police Department. LAPD did not have any missing person reports matching the boy’s description, CHP said. Anyone with information on the boy’s identity is asked to call the L.A. Department of Children and Family Services (1-800-540-4000) or the CHP’s Central Los Angeles area office (213-744-2331).

LAFD Extinguishes Massive Fire In Chinatown; One Person In Critical Condition

One person is in critical condition Friday after being rescued from a raging fire at a vacant three-story apartment building under construction in Chinatown that Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters were able to extinguish after a prolonged battle. Fire crews responded at 3:43 a.m. to 877 N. Bunker Hill Ave. near College Street and east of the Harbor (110) Freeway where they encountered intense flames burning on the first and third floors of the vacant building and had spread to two nearby apartment buildings, LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said. In addition to the person in critical condition, two others were rescued but chose not to go to a hospital, the LAFD reported. According to Fox 11, four others were injured. The LAFD reported 10 people have been displaced by the fire and the Red Cross has been contacted to assist them, Stewart said. It took over 130 firefighters an hour and 36 minutes to contain the flames.

L.A. Leaders Celebrate Completion Of 10-Mile Bike Path Between Sylmar And Burbank

A bike path that is years in the making has officially been completed, and Los Angeles leaders gathered near the Hollywood Burbank Airport to celebrate the accomplishment. The San Fernando Bike Path is expected to “enhance commuting options connecting to major employers along the route, provide an alternative to car travel and reduce traffic congestion, and promote healthier lifestyles among residents,” officials said. The project has been under construction in various phases for several years, but Monday’s milestone marked the completion of the final stage, adding more than four miles of new paved bike path, safety lighting and signage and a new bridge over the Tujunga wash. The final stage of construction, Phase III, completes the nearly 10-mile continuous bike path, along the busy San Fernando Road, from the Sylmar neighborhood of L.A. to the city of Burbank’s border. City officials say its completion marks a significant expansion of the city’s cycling infrastructure. The bikeway is located within the right-of-way owned by L.A. Metro, and it is located adjacent to an active rail line belonging to the regional rail provider Metrolink.
