715,833 Signatures Turned In To Recall L.A. County D.A. Gascón, Election Officials Say
A preliminary count of signatures submitted in a petition to recall Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón totals 715,833, L.A. County elections officials reported Saturday. L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan said his office has completed the first step in the review of the petitions submitted Wednesday and is now working on verifying signatures. The process must be completed no later than Aug. 17. At least 566,857 valid signatures are required before voters can decide whether to recall Gascón from office. Fueled in part by rising crime and homelessness, Gascón and his progressive policies have been the subject of intense criticism since he was elected in 2020. Although the recall campaign said it turned in more than 715,000 signatures, some of those will be disqualified during the verification process conducted by the county registrar. Election officials plan to use the random sampling technique for the verification of petition signatures, which is allowed under the California Elections Code. The random sample is 5% of the total number of signatures submitted. If the petition meets the sufficiency requirement, it must be certified by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors at its next regular meeting.

Video: Deputy, Good Samaritans Flip Over Submerged Car With Trapped Driver
An unconscious driver trapped in a flooded vehicle was saved after bystanders and a deputy waded into a murky Florida canal to flip her car back onto its wheels. The identity of the driver was not released, but the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reports she is in critical condition at a hospital. It happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, on Maytown Road in Oak Hill, 60 miles northeast of Orlando. Body cam video shows a Volusia County sheriff’s deputy arrived to find the driver’s side of a vehicle submerged in about 4 feet of water, and an “unresponsive” woman belted inside. Two people are seen attempting to flip over the vehicle, and the deputy quickly walks into the canal and joins them. “Can we get this thing flipped or not?” he asks. “We need some help pushing.” Grunts are heard as multiple sets of hands push against the vehicle’s roof. It slowly begins to move and is shown falling back onto its wheels in the water. The deputy then works to cut the driver free from a tangle of seat belts and deployed airbags.

LA County COVID-19 Hospitalizations Top 1,000 As Virus Spread Continues
The number of COVID-19-positive patients in LA County hospitals has jumped past the 1,000 mark and the county has reported its highest daily number of virus-related deaths since late March. The county Department of Public Health reported 18 COVID deaths on Friday, the largest daily number since March 30. The fatalities raised the county's virus-related death toll to 32,413. According to state figures, there were 1,021 COVID-positive patients in county hospitals as of Friday, up from 989 on Thursday. The number of those patients being treated in intensive care was 99, down from 103 a day earlier. Hospital numbers have been steadily rising in recent months, an increase health officials have attributed to renewed rapid spread of the virus thanks to the infectious BA.4 and BA.5 variants, which authorities say are highly contagious and capable of re-infecting previous patients. Health officials have said that many of those patients entered the hospital for other reasons before testing positive for COVID, but they still place an added burden on hospital staff as they require special infection-control measures. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said Thursday roughly 40% of patients with the virus were admitted for COVID illness, while 60% were admitted for other reasons.
