A Mahnomen County deputy died this morning, more than a year after being shot while on duty, according to The Star Tribune.

Deputy Chris Dewey, who was shot in the head and abdomen last February, died at approximately 10:30 a.m. at home with his wife, Emily.

Dewey was wounded when he confronted two men after a report of shots fired. He underwent multiple surgeries and physical therapy, but his health recently began to deteriorate, according to the report.

The alleged gunman, Thomas L. Fairbanks, was charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder but has yet to go on trial.

"Our thoughts and prayer go out to the family of Chris and Emily Dewey along with the law enforcement family as we all mourn together," Sheriff Doug Krier said in a prepared statement.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
