City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana announced Sunday he has enrolled in an alcohol treatment center and is temporarily stepping down from his post.

"I do not know how long this stage of my journey will be," Santana said in a statement. "I apologize to may family, friends, the mayor, the City Council, CAO staff and the entire city family for my irresponsible behavior.

"The outpouring of support and prayer has helped carry my family and me during this difficult time."

Santana was arrested by the California Highway Patrol shortly after midnight on Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Santana said Assistant City Administrative Officer Ray Ciranna will serve as acting chief administrative officer in his absence.
