Sheriff's deputies on Monday arrested a transient who allegedly tried to rob an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer, whose personal property was stolen but eventually recovered, authorities said.
Matthew Huhta, 20, is being held in lieu of $50,000 at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station jail on suspicion of attempted robbery, and is awaiting arraignment.
A second suspect in the strong-arm robbery and described as a white male, 16 to 21 years old, wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt and riding a small bicycle remains at large, said Sgt. Dan Peacock.
The incident occurred about 2 p.m. near the intersection of Bouquet Canyon and Newhall Ranch roads in Saugus.
The two suspects rode up to the off-duty officer on bicycles, attacked the officer, grabbed some personal items and fled, Peacock said.Police immediately set up a perimeter, but shut it down around 3:40 p.m., he said.
