Cops attacked

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Gunmen who shot at Los Angeles police in separate incidents were at large today, and the union that represents the officers asked for the public's help in apprehending them.

Suspected burglars opened fire on officers investigating car break-ins in the 8500 block of Cedros Avenue near Chase Street in the North Hills area around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, said Sgt. A.J. DeBellis of the Los Angeles Police Department's Mission Station.

None of the officers were injured, but their police car was damaged. One suspect was arrested but another escaped. Hours earlier, a gunman shot at an off-duty LAPD officer at Martin Luther King and Avalon boulevards in South Los Angeles. He pulled up next tothe officer's car and opened fire but missed.

The suspect remains at large. His vehicle was described as a Chevrolet Tahoe with chrome rims.

"This are cold-blooded attempts to murder unsuspecting officers,"' said Paul Weber, president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. "We hope that the community will be willing to help by reporting anything they know regarding these attacks."

"Public safety is a strong two-way partnership,"Weber added. "As our dedicated LAPD officers protect our city, we need help to protect them by making it clear that Los Angeles is a city in which violence on law enforcement is never tolerated, and that those who threaten our police officers threaten our own communities."

He urged those with information about the suspects to contact the LAPD at (877) LAPD-24-7.
