10 Killed, 10 Wounded In Los Angeles County Mass Shooting. Suspected Gunman Identified, Confirmed Dead By LASD
Ten people were killed, and another 10 were injured in a mass shooting late Saturday in Monterey Park following a Lunar New Year celebration that attracted thousands. According to authorities, at approximately 10:22 p.m., officers from the Monterey Park police department responded to a "shots fired" call at a dance studio on the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park. At around 11:00 a.m. Torrance Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department surrounded a vehicle of interest. At about 12:40 p.m., a SWAT team consisting of almost a dozen officers swarmed the vehicle and searched the interior. Little is known about the suspect at this time, other than the fact he is male. However, officials as of 11:27 a.m. did release the first images. A motive for the mass shooting remains unknown. "As far as motive goes, it is too early to know what the motive is," said Capt. Meyer.

Family of man who died after LAPD tasering files $50M damages claim
Relatives of Keenan Anderson, a Black man who went into cardiac arrest and died earlier this month after Los Angeles police Tasered him multiple times and shackled him following a Venice traffic collision, filed a $50 million damages claim against the city Friday. The Los Angeles Police Protective League issued a statement insisting that Anderson escalated the confrontation with his behavior, which included running away from officers into traffic, while also suggesting he was high on drugs at the time."Minor auto accidents are usually handled with an exchange of information between the drivers and a call to one's insurance carrier," according to the LAPPL. "On the other hand, when an individual who is high on cocaine is in an accident, tries to open the car door of an innocent driver, and then flees the scene by running into traffic, police officers must act. We demand that the chief of police release the missing seven minutes of body-worn camera video that will capture the entire episode with Mr. Anderson. We believe the missing video will confirm that Mr. Anderson was the one who escalated this tragic incident that his family and Mr. Crump are now trying to shamelessly profit from."

Fatal Mid-City Stabbing In Crenshaw Nursing Home Leaves One Dead, One Injured
Two people were injured in a stabbing at a Crenshaw nursing home Friday night. A man in his 60s was fatally stabbed and a man in his 30s was injured. The incident occurred at a nursing home. The alleged attacker, a man in his 60s, was arrested. The deceased victim's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin. Police have not released any details on the man in custody or what precipitated the stabbings.

1 Dead, 1 Critically Injured As Crash Sends Vehicle Into Building In Broadway-Manchester
A two-car crash in the Broadway-Manchester area of South Los Angeles left one person dead at the scene and hospitalized another person in critical condition early Sunday morning. The collision was reported just after 5 a.m. in the 11400 block of South Main Street, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in an alert. One vehicle careened into a building, and at least one of the drivers was trapped in their vehicle. Footage shared to the Citizen app shows a badly damaged white SUV at the scene. No information about the drivers has been released, and no one else was injured. The L.A. Department of Building and Safety was inspecting the integrity of the structure.

3 Detained After Police Shoot At Alleged Man With Gun In Arleta
Three people have been detained in a shooting involving police officers Saturday in Arleta, authorities said. No one was struck by gunfire. An officer suffered a minor hand injury from a fall during the incident, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. Officers were conducting a stolen vehicle investigation in the area of Hoyt Street and Canterbury Avenue at about 3 a.m. when they saw three people on the sidewalk on Hoyt Street, police said. A man in the trio turned toward the officers and allegedly pointed what police said appeared to be a handgun in their direction. An officer shot at the man and all three people ran. A large perimeter was established, and a SWAT team and K-9 unit responded to assist in a search of the area. All three people were later located, with two of the individuals suffering K-9 bites. They were taken to a hospital for treatment. Police have not located a handgun. No further information was immediately available.

French Bulldog Stolen During Encino Burglary; Owner Offering $15,000 Reward For Safe Return
A woman's beloved French bulldog named Lala was stolen during a burglary in Encino and the terrifying ordeal was all caught on surveillance video. It happened Thursday night. The video shows the burglars running across her yard, carrying what appear to be white bags. Lala's owner told Eyewitness News the dog is microchipped and she's offering a $15,000 reward in hopes someone will bring her home. "I would suggest that they either buy the dog and then collect the reward or best yet, drop it off at the fire station or West Valley PD or any police department," said a neighbor of the owner. The burglars reportedly also stole other personal items including expensive handbags. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Music Producer Max Lord Charged With Possessing Assault Weapons And Silencers, DA Says
Grammy award-winning hip hop music producer Max Adam Lord was charged Friday with possessing assault weapons and silencers. Lord, 30, is set to be arraigned next Wednesday in a Van Nuys courtroom on eight felony counts of possession of an assault weapon and four felony counts of possession of a silencer, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The criminal complaint alleges that Lord was found in possession of semiautomatic rifles, AR-style altered semiautomatic pistols and firearm silencers during a Jan. 4 search of his Studio City home, according to the District Attorney's Office. Lord was arrested Jan. 4 by Los Angeles police and released later that day on bond, jail records show.

Man Found Fatally Wounded In South Gate
A man was fatally wounded Saturday in South Gate. South Gate police officers dispatched about 11:45 a.m. to the 9400 block of State Street located a man lying unresponsive on the street suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Paramedics rushed the man to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The investigation was ongoing and no further information was immediately available. Record Number Of People Try To Waltz Through TSA With Firearm In 2022
A total of 6,542 firearms were found in 262 different airports inside carry-on bags nationwide but while it was a record-breaking year for the U.S, discoveries at LA-area airports are down slightly. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at the five Los Angeles-area airports discovered 142 firearms in travelers’ carry-on luggage last year. Only two of the five local airports set a new record: Ontario International Airport (ONT) and John Wayne Airport Orange County (SNA). "Every one of these firearms was discovered during the routine X-ray screening of carry-on property at airport security checkpoints," the agency said in a news release. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport topped the highest number of firearms found with 448 followed by Dallas Worth International Airport with 385. Although the cumulative number of firearms brought by travelers to security checkpoints at Los Angeles-area airports is lower than last year, TSA Federal Security Director in Los Angeles Jason Pantages said that one gun discovered in carry-on luggage is one too many.

CBP Seizes More Than $4 Million Worth Of Cocaine Concealed In Decorative Rocks In San Diego
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have made a major drug bust, finding more than $4 million worth of cocaine concealed within a shipment of decorative stones. On Jan. 11, the officers, assigned to the Tecate Cargo Facility in San Diego, encountered a 36- year-old driver of a tractor-trailer with a shipment disguised as rocks. During an inspection of the truck, CBP officers offloaded one of the commodities and found "an anomaly" on one of the stones. A K-9 team screened the shipment and received a positive alert from a detector dog. According to a release from the agency on Wednesday, 57 cellophane-wrapped packages of cocaine were discovered. The packages were concealed within a plaster-like material designed to appear like stones. CBP officers extracted approximately 256 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated value of approximately $4.1 million.

6 Arrested After 'Cop City' Protesters Lit Atlanta PD Cruiser Ablaze, Smashed Windows
A protest turned violent in downtown Atlanta on Saturday night in the wake of the death of an environmental activist who was killed by authorities this week after officials said the 26-year-old shot a state trooper. Masked activists dressed in all black threw rocks and lit fireworks in front of a skyscraper that houses the Atlanta Police Foundation, shattering large glass windows. They then lit a police cruiser on fire, smashed more windows and vandalized walls with anti-police graffiti as stunned tourists scattered. The violent protesters were a subsection of hundreds of demonstrators who had gathered and marched up Atlanta's famed Peachtree Street to mourn the death of the protester, a nonbinary person who went by the name Tortuguita and used they/it pronouns. Tortuguita was killed Wednesday as authorities cleared a small group of protesters from the site of a planned Atlanta-area public safety training center that activists have dubbed “Cop City.”

Watch: Utah Trooper Reunites With Doctor Who Saved His Life Nearly 45 Years Ago
Utah Highway Patrol trooper Ralph Evans’ life was spared nearly 45 years ago thanks to a doctor that happened to spot the officer on the side of a road after he’d been shot. Recently, the trooper got the opportunity to reunite with the man who saved his life. KSL News spoke with Evans about the moments leading up to what could have been the last day of his life. The trooper was on his way to assist with a traffic accident when he was flagged down by two girls. They told the officer they had been assaulted by a man in a Jeep parked a short distance down the road but managed to escape. Evans located the man, who was intoxicated, and had begun handcuffing him when, suddenly, the suspect’s 13-year-old son shot the trooper twice – once in the neck and once in the lower back. "I tried to move and I couldn't move ... but I could feel blood coming out of my head," Evans recalled. "And as I lay there wondering what was going to happen, if I was going to die, I heard somebody say, 'I'm a doctor and I'll do all I can to help you.'"

1 Dead After SUV Goes Down Embankment Next To Freeway In Harbor Gateway
One person died after their vehicle went down an embankment next to the 110 Freeway in Harbor Gateway Sunday morning. The crash was reported just after 7 a.m., and when Los Angeles Fire Department officials arrived at the northbound 110 Freeway south of Redondo Beach Boulevard, they found one person had been trapped in the vehicle, officials said in an alert. That person, whose name, age and gender were not immediately released, was declared dead inside the vehicle, which appears to be a gray Hummer H3 or similar SUV. No other vehicles are believed to be involved, and no one else was injured.

Fire Damages Vacant Commercial Building That Was Site Of Previous Burn
Firefighters in Boyle Heights knocked down a fire Sunday at a vacant single-story building that housed a fast-food restaurant and was also the site of a previous burn, authorities said. A total of 22 firefighters dispatched at 6:13 a.m. to 1324 S. Soto St. had the blaze out within 30 minutes of their arrival, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. No injuries were reported, and no other structures were damaged. The cause of the fire was being investigated.

Small 2.3-Magnitude Earthquake Reported Near Sherman Oaks
A 2.3-magnitude earthquake was reported in the Sherman Oaks area Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck around 4 p.m. about a mile northeast of the area and the temblor was reported to be about 1.9 miles deep. According to some residents, some shaking was felt in the area. Friday’s vote underscores the growing political might of the council’s progressive bloc, which successfully championed a more aggressive set of policies. The new legislation is also widely viewed as a victory for tenant rights advocates. The COVID-19 emergency rules were passed amid unprecedented disruption at the start of the pandemic, along with similar measures at other levels of government. But Los Angeles’ anti-eviction protections remained in place even as other measures expired, with local leaders wary of exacerbating homelessness and overcrowding problems that had already reached crisis proportions.
