LACo Woman Pleads Guilty to Paying People in Skid Row to Vote

A woman who worked as a longtime signature collector for ballot initiatives pleaded guilty Monday to paying homeless people in Los Angeles’ Skid Row and elsewhere $2 or $3 to register to vote. Brenda Lee Brown Armstrong, 64, of Marina del Rey, also known as “Anika,” entered a plea to one count of paying another person to register to vote, a federal charge that carries a penalty of up to five years behind bars. Sentencing was scheduled for Aug. 31. According to her plea agreement, for nearly 20 years, Armstrong periodically worked as a “petition circulator.” In that role, she was paid by coordinators to collect voter signatures on official petitions that qualify initiatives, referendums and recalls for California state ballots. Prosecutors said Armstrong drove around the Los Angeles area to find registered voters to sign the petitions.

6 people hurt in stabbings at New York’s Penn Station with a suspect in custody, authorities says

Six people were injured in a stabbing inside New York’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, authorities said, less than a day before thousands of fans are expected to descend on neighboring Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals. A suspect was taken into custody after the attack, which unfolded around 7 p.m. in one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs. The sprawling rail complex beneath Madison Square Garden serves Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit and New York City subway lines and is used by hundreds of thousands of commuters and travelers each day. Paramedics found one victim with serious injuries, two with moderate injuries and two with minor injuries, according to the city’s fire department. All five were taken to Bellevue Hospital. Another person, whose condition was not immediately known, was transported to a separate hospital. Authorities did not immediately release details about what led to the stabbing or whether the victims were targeted. By late Sunday, the immediate chaos had given way to a familiar Penn Station scene. Travelers wheeled luggage past a roped-off area near Tracks 5 and 6 where medical gloves, discarded bandages and traces of blood still marked the floor.

Feds say Vegas woman on trial for murder in Mexico targeted older men on dating apps

A U.S. woman on trial for murder in Mexico is expected to be extradited to the states to face additional charges tied to accusations that she used dating apps to befriend older men before drugging, robbing and, in at least one instance, killing them. In a February 2025 bulletin, the FBI said Aurora Phelps, a dual U.S.-Mexico citizen, “either met individuals online or exploited those known to her in order to steal their personal information” between 2019 and 2022. Phelps, 44, who also went by the names Aurora Velasco, Aurora Flores and Aurora Alvarez, is accused of using that personal information to access victims’ bank, Social Security and retirement accounts. “It is believed Mrs. Phelps would sometimes drug her victims without their knowledge to obtain this information,” the bulletin stated. “Mrs. Phelps primarily targeted elderly men, however, she was known to target all age groups as well as women.” Phelps reportedly carried out the schemes while married to Las Vegas resident William Phelps, who spoke to the Los Angeles Times last year.
