Possible California serial killer charged in 4 murders as probe continues

A 74-year-old San Diego man in custody in connection with human remains found near Interstate 5 three years ago has been charged with three additional counts of murder, including one cold case that is more than 30 years old. Dwight Rhone was initially arrested on Dec. 5, 2024, in connection with the killing of 54-year-old Bernardo Moreno. Prosecutors with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said Rhone killed Moreno after their dogs got into a fight and Moreno stabbed Rhone’s dog. The victim’s charred body was discovered in October 2023 near the Interstate 5 and State Route 905 interchange after California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a brush fire in the area. According to the DA’s office, Moreno died from a gunshot wound to the base of his skull. Investigators now say three additional killings have been tied to Rhone, including the death of Heriberto Ruiz, whose body was found in an alley near the 3500 block of Acacia Street in December 1993. The medical examiner determined he had been strangled.

Man pleads guilty to killing a top Minnesota Democrat and her husband while posing as an officer

A Minnesota man who posed as a police officer and went door-to-door in the middle of the night, killing the top Democrat in the state House and her husband and wounding a state senator and his wife, pleaded guilty to murder on Thursday so that federal prosecutors would not seek the death penalty. The attacks by Vance Boelter, 58, sparked the largest search for a suspect in state history. They also reverberated far beyond Minnesota, as elected officials across the country feared that escalating threats and polarization could lead to more violence. There were brief sobs from the courtroom gallery on Thursday as family members of Melissa and Mark Hortman sat alongside Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, while the chilling events of June 14, 2025, were described in great detail. Disguised with a tactical uniform and realistic mask that covered his entire head, Boelter drove a fake police SUV with lights flashing to the legislators’ homes. As his federal defense attorney questioned him about his actions, he repeatedly said a simple “yes,” including whether he pressed a gun to Melissa Hortman’s head and fired. The family’s golden retriever was so gravely injured that it had to be euthanized.
