Man charged in fatal stabbing of actor James Handy in Tarzana

A 44-year-old man was charged Friday with murder in the stabbing death of 81-year-old actor James Handy, who was attacked outside a home in Tarzana earlier this week, authorities said. Michael Gledhill was charged with one count of murder, as well as a special allegation of personal use of a deadly weapon, a knife, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Authorities said the attack occurred on June 3 at approximately 9:30 a.m., when officers responded to a 911 call in the 19200 block of Erwin Street. Upon arrival, they found Handy with stab wounds lying in the front yard of a home. Handy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Police arrested Gledhill, who lived at the residence with his mother, who had a romantic relationship with Handy. “No one’s life should end this way, stabbed in the chest and left to die in a front yard,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. “James Handy deserved to live out his final years enjoying what he worked so hard for and sharing it with the people he loved and cherished.” Gledhill was scheduled to appear in Van Nuys County Court on Thursday for his arraignment. If convicted, he faces a sentence of 26 years to life in state prison. Prosecutors requested bail be set at $2.02 million.

Masked men caught on camera during Hyde Park burglary spree

Two masked men were captured on surveillance footage burglarizing a home in Los Angeles’ Hyde Park neighborhood on June 2. The burglary, which happened 10 minutes after a family member left the house, was one of at least six break-ins reported in the neighborhood that day. The homeowners told KTLA they believe the two men seen on camera may be responsible for other recent break-ins in the area. Surveillance video shows the men, both wearing gloves, walking through the house, looking around and peering out the front window. The thieves took thousands of dollars in valuables from the home, the family said, including diamond, ruby and gold jewelry, antique family heirlooms, collectable coins and $6,000 in cash. The savings from their 11-year-old son’s piggy bank were also stolen during the break-in. The men also allegedly dumped ashes out of a family urn. According to the homeowners, the suspects appeared comfortable moving from room to room inside the house. They eventually noticed one of the surveillance cameras and turned it off. As of the time of the report, police have not caught those responsible for the burglaries.

‘Go to hell': BWC video shows man run at Wash. deputy, pull out handgun before OIS

A deputy shot an armed suspect while assisting firefighters responding to a vehicle fire, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on June 4 when deputies were dispatched to assist firefighters at a property flagged for prior violent criminal activity. Because of the property’s history, firefighters were not permitted to respond without law enforcement assistance. Video shows an officer arriving at the scene and ordering a man he called “John” to back away from a vehicle fire. The man refused and appeared to spray a liquid at the fire. The officer tried to coax the man away from the fire so that firefighters could respond. The man was combative and ran at the deputy before backing away. The man yelled that code enforcement was “going to kill him.” After further discussion with the deputy, the man started to move toward him. He told the deputy to “go to hell” before pulling a gun from his waistband and running at the deputy. The deputy fired multiple shots, striking the suspect. “Why the f*** would you do that, John?” the deputy said as he radioed for backup and instructed dispatchers to hold firefighters back.
