Kidnapped child found in Mexico; father arrested in mother’s slaying
A man who kidnapped his 5-year-old daughter and killed her mother before fleeing to Mexico has been arrested and will be extradited back to the United States, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Ruben Fregoso, 40, was apprehended in Mexico over the weekend, the LAPD said in a news release. Last month, according to police, Fregoso killed his 36-year-old girlfriend and then abducted their daughter. Details on where and when he was captured were not immediately available. “His 5-year-old daughter, Daleza Fregoso, a United States citizen, was also located safely and is in the custody of Mexican officials,” the LAPD said. The child is expected to be reunited with her family in Los Angeles in the coming days while the extradition process is underway, police said. Though police have identified the suspect as Ruben Fregoso, Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged him under the name Ruben Fregosojuarez with one count of murder and one misdemeanor count of child abuse under circumstance or conditions other than great bodily injury or death. The search for Daleza Fregoso began on May 25, when authorities issued an Amber Alert in Southern California. Earlier that day, the LAPD did a welfare check in the 2600 block of South Alsace Avenue in West Adams and found the body of Marysol Garcia inside.
Unsolved LA: No motive, no gang ties. So why was a LADWP lineman murdered in 2020?
Six years after Akeem "AJ" Coburn was shot and killed in a Gardena driveway, his family is still searching for answers and hoping renewed attention will help bring justice. Coburn, a lineman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP), had recently proposed to his fiancée, Brandi Harris. Just ten days after she said "yes," he was gunned down while standing outside Harris's family home on July 29, 2020. "I saw the paramedics pulling a white sheet over him," Harris said. "And I just remember screaming at the top of my lungs, because that moment felt like the worst time of my life." "This was an actual man, a father, a partner, a son, a brother," Harris said. On the night of the shooting, Harris had stepped inside the Gardena home to pick up her daughter while Coburn stayed in the driveway, talking with her cousin. "I had not been in the house for at least five minutes when I heard gunshots," she said. Surveillance video captured a car -- likely a Mercedes -- driving down Vermont Avenue seconds before a passenger opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon. Detectives say Coburn appears to have been targeted without reason.

Ex-businessman extradited and charged in execution-style killings across Southern California
A former businessman has been charged and extradited in connection to the execution-style killings of an attorney in Rolling Hills Estates in 2009 and an ex-employee in Whittier in 2011, according to authorities. Richard Wall Sr., 73, was charged with two counts each of murder and conspiracy to commit murder with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders, lying in wait and murder for financial gain, according to a Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office news release. Wall is also a suspect of a third killing in Las Vegas. He was booked into the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles County on Friday, according to inmate records. “When Richard Wall Senior lost lawsuits, instead of appealing the verdicts, he allegedly decided to kill those who opposed him in court,” said Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman in the release. “These were vicious and callous murders that we believe came at the behest of Mr. Wall who thought killing two people would end his legal problems. Such allegedly ruthless decision-making has landed Mr. Wall in far worse shape now.”

LA Council Committee to Weigh in On Delayed Contracts for Tenant Aid Services
A Los Angeles City Council committee will hear a report Wednesday from city attorneys explaining why a contract for homeless prevention and eviction defense services has yet to be finalized despite being approved three months ago. In March, the council authorized the distribution of $177 million in Measure United to House LA revenue to Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, Liberty Hill Foundation, Strategic Action For A Just Economy and Southern California Housing Rights Center. The council directed City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto to sign off on the contracts with the groups, which oversee a range of tenant-related services as part of the Stay Housed LA program. Despite that approval and direction, Feldstein Soto has yet to finalize the contracts — and now some council members want answers. The council’s Housing and Homelessness Committee will hear from city attorneys, as well as representatives for the Los Angeles Housing Department to learn about how delays have impacted operations and services.
